A new study suggests that erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra can cause more than a third of Americans to suffer from sexual side effects, including impotence.
The study,, from a medical group in California, is based on data from two studies of men who took Viagra for several years after they became aroused with an erect penis.
They found that men who took the drug for more than four years had been able to maintain a sexual relationship with the erect penis for more than four months. But more than one in five men experienced erectile dysfunction, or ED, at some point in their lives.
"Many men with erectile dysfunction do not have sexual intimacy with their partners," said study co-author Dr. Mark S. Gerber of Stanford University in San Francisco. "So it is crucial to have sexual relations with the patient as well as with their partner."
Researchers looked at data from more than 20,000 men who had been taking Viagra for a minimum of four years. They found that the men who took Viagra for more than four years suffered from erectile dysfunction.

"Erectile dysfunction is the most common cause of sexual dysfunction in men and can lead to other health issues such as depression, poor sexual desire, and anxiety," said, associate professor of medical and urology at the University of Washington. Researchers at Stanford said that the results do not mean that Viagra is a safe medication for men with ED. The study's authors added that the data "does not provide proof that Viagra is safe for men with ED, or for men who have other health problems."
Researchers have already begun looking into alternative treatment options for ED, including counseling."Some men are reluctant to talk about their health, and they may feel embarrassed to discuss their condition with their partners," Gerber said. "It is important for them to seek counseling and talk openly with their doctors about their condition."
The researchers reviewed data from nearly 1,000 men, including men who had taken Viagra since at least 2002, who had ED at least four months after their symptoms began. They compared the data with the data from more than 1,000 men who had taken the drug for more than four years.
More than half of the men taking the drug said they were able to maintain an erection after taking it for more than four months. The other half reported no symptoms at all after they began taking the drug for more than four years.
The findings show that men who took Viagra for more than four years had been able to maintain a sexual relationship with the erect penis for more than four months.
"There are still a lot of questions about erectile dysfunction in this population," Gerber said. "The data presented in the paper have the potential to play a big role in the development of other health issues."
